The post hardcore / screamo scene stands at the moment clearly the dominant genre of 2005 in the uk underground scene, spouting acts like rabbits in mating season, each band raging to push the limit on the next and scar for good.

But how long can this last? With so many acts popping out of nowhere you have to wonder is there any originality left in this overused scene. After the death of real punk, and real metal being washed away by tribes of new metal groups you can’t but wonder how much longer this will carry on being the hype.

Tonight’s crowd obviously have more faith, packing the little café like a suitcase on a round the world trip, each as eager as the other to keep alive what keeps them going.

Tonight’s first act certainly put the crowd’s gig money to good use, raging the place with ecstatically energetic screams, blissful harmonies and crushing guitars.

They’re loud, they’re focused and they sure as hell show this crowd what they’re about, I introduce to you Kamanchi Cipher

Taking to the stage like its theirs, the band strike into four songs of complete rage and anger. An ear blistering set, which only deserves much recognition, we salute you boys for bringing a little anger to our lives.

(**)

Next to hit the stage are emo punk foursome Lampoon.

From their first song it is easy to tell the guys know what they’re doing, displaying a happier yet still darker side to what would be the same old happy c**p.

Just merging into something a little less un-original, the guys do well, but you can’t help but feel…. again, you’ve heard this somewhere else, each song barely just missing the same old same old with catchy lyrics and the occasional pun from their energetic lead singer.

Maybe it’s just me being a nag, but this scene needs something original to quench its thirst, and these guys barely do this.

Still a good set of shooting guitars, skull pounding beats and an emotional array of whining vocals. Maybe think about what you want in this case, cause there’s a lot to learn.

(**)

Then finally, the reason our little café is full to the walls of eagerly awaiting customers, their prayers are answered, WITHOUT THOUGHT hit the stage.

Ramming the crowd with what can only be called adrenaline injected post hardcore mayhem, the band certainly gives the crowd a decent show.

Bragging a blinding e.p and spots at upcoming Kerrang sponsored gigs, its easy to see how they’ve got here, and makes you wonder why they have the time to play in venues as little as ours, but still they do, letting rip what can only be described as 40 minutes of genius.Still maybe not curving on the original side at this point you don’t give a damn. At the end of the day these guys kick, and could teach a fair few of these over populating bands how to do things properly. I could certainly tell you, if I was allowed to, how good the e.p I purchased afterwards was………….. You still here?

CHECK THEM OUT!

Keep safe
